Upon receiving this Bosch Green PMD 7 from Amazon, I immediately began testing it. It claims to detect live wires to a depth of 5cm, non-ferrous metals to a depth of 6cm, and a ferrous metals to a depth of 7cm.
I read the instructions, and it's simple enough. Place it on the wall and it emits different tones and shows different lights depending on what it thinks it has found in the wall. It had great difficulty tracing live wires in my house. The manual says to move it over the area several times to increase the accuracy of detection, as most or all of these detectors say, but when moving it over the area several times, all I got was different readings. One one pass, there's a live wire, on another, there is no live wire. If I left it on a 'live wire', it would sometimes even stop beeping and show a green light, to say there is nothing in the wall.
People say that it's alright to buy cheap tools if you are just a DIYer, people say only professionals need quality tools - In my experience, buying 'DIY quality' cheap tools is a waste of time. They never work, they never get the job done right, and you find out that you needed a higher quality tool to get the job done.
This detector seemed like a decent deal when I needed something to replace an old one. I've since got a full refund from Amazon, and replaced it with the Bosch Blue GMS120, which seems to work much better than this.
